This SCA approved module will propel you in the right direction with all the skills you need to be a great barista, better consumer and even a cafe owner.

This course teaches both theory and practical - theory for your understanding and practical to ensure that you know your way behind the espresso bar. From learning the history of coffee to making latte art, setting your grinder safety precautions and customer service, this course will cover the basics.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • know important producing countries and their geographic locations

  • how to maintain fresh beans and proper storage to minimize deterioration

  • analyze key equipment needed for a complete workspace and how to maximize speed and efficiency

  • demonstration of good dosing techniques and calibration

  • basic sensory qualities of an under-extracted, over-extract shot and a good espresso

  • ‘free pour’ a simple latte art pattern consistently

  • understand the basic foundation to safety and hygiene when using espresso machines and cleaning chemicals

  • maintaining a clean workstation when preparing and serving espresso beverages

  • understand the results of a badly maintained espresso machine and how to avoid and solve them

  • understand what is good communication skills and the definition of good customer service

  • demonstrate a high standard of customer service when greeting customers and taking orders

  • understand the cost involved in prepping and serving espresso beverages in a café setting
